The Great Legal Bake: Halloween

The 4th – 8th November 2024 marks Pro Bono Week, and in conjunction with this is the Great Legal Bake, the sweetest fundraiser of the year!

The aim of the Great Legal Bake is to raise dough to support free frontline services that help some of society’s most vulnerable people. So of course, the team at Burton Copeland were raring to go!

The Great Legal Bake runs a photo competition during the week, judged by Toby Brown (Chair of Pro Bono Week organising committee and barrister at South Square), with prizes awarded for:

  •         Best themed cake
  •         Tastiest looking cake
  •         Best overall cake

At Burton Copeland, the competition was fierce, with a fantastic selection of both sweet and savoury bakes. In the end, Damian Gwiazdowski reigned supreme and was crowned Star Baker for his sweet cheese swirls made with only an oven and a fork, but masses of imagination!

Our second place award went to Jenny with her cauldron-shaped crispy and chocolatey cornflake cakes.

Joint third place went to Lucy with her scary spider sponge, Sarah Read with her non-cheesy and deliciously baked cheesecake, and Becky with her ghostly bloodied fingers (AKA baked hot dogs).

Fourth place was awarded to Jack with his tempting chocolate brownies, and 5th place went to Gwyn with his bloody Victorian spooky sponge (he even made his own jam!)

The Wooden Spoon award went to Sean for bringing his dad’s eerie but delicious Biscoff bake. And the award for Best Presented cake went to Debbie’s tasty graveyard chocolate slab.

As the dates timed in nicely with ‘spooky season’, we decided to go for a Halloween theme for our Legal Bake, with some of the team getting very creative!

We also hosted a pumpkin carving competition with a prize for the coolest craftsperson, with the prize going to Jenny Garwood.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Burton Copeland fundraiser without the opportunity to share some beers and pizza as a team.

We’re very pleased to say we raised a grand total of £124.00. All funds raised from the Great Legal Bake will be donated to the Access to Justice Foundation and the London Legal Support Trust.
