Partnership for Claire Tapper
Claire joined Burton Copeland in 1990 as a clerk working in the juvenile court at the former City Magistrates Court in Manchester alongside past MLS president, the late Michael Green. Claire has worked at all levels in the criminal department at Burton Copeland since. Working in the Magistrates Court, Police Station, Prison Law and Crown Court Departments. She is currently one of the Senior Lawyers in the Crown Court Department dealing with serious and complex crime.
Senior Partner Gwyn Lewis said, “Claire has been an integral and cherished part of this business for over three decades. We wanted to recognise and reward her for her loyalty and continued support. Her experience of criminal law is beyond compare and we want to ensure that her knowledge and skills are passed on to our younger generation of lawyers as we see the business grow”
Throughout her career Claire has seen many changes to the business. When she started it was a multi disciplined practice covering all areas of law, but now focusses solely or Criminal and Regulatory Law. She has moved offices on several occasions and seen numerous changes in the law. Most of the current crown court judges in Manchester were instructed by Claire when they were junior counsel.
Claire said, “I am absolutely delighted at being made partner, many of the people I work with today, I can recall meeting on my first day. I feel that Burton Copeland has been like a second family to me for over 30 years and I very much look forward to working with the Management Team to drive the business onward and upward.”
Practice Director Deborah Jackson said, “As we look forward to the next generation of young lawyers, it is crucial that we provide them with first-rate support, supervision and management. We are thrilled that Claire has accepted the offer of partnership and is ready to take on the challenge of assisting us in their leadership.”
Staff celebrated the event with a drinks and nibbles reception in the office and were joined by retired Managing Partner Mike Mackey who employed Claire all of those years ago. Mike said “I have known Claire for a long time, she is a real asset to the company and I am really pleased at her appointment which is well deserved. It was only right that I returned to raise a glass with her”
